Gholston Presented Award at Senior Expo

93.1 FM & AM-630 WNEG hosted the 19th WNEG Senior Expo on Thursday at the Stephens County Recreation Department Rose Lane Activity Center and Senior Center.

The Expo was from 9 A.M.-1 P.M. and included health services, insurance, banks, home care and senior living and more. The free event was attended by nearly 400, and Bojangles of Toccoa provided food for many of the attendees.

WNEG presented the “Active Senior of the Year” award to Larry Gholston. Gholston has been a key organizer for the Poke Sallet Festival in Toccoa, and with the assistance of his wife, Debra, delivers Meals on Wheels to those in need. He told WNEG that Meals on Wheels was something that interested him after retirement. “ I remember when the senior center building was under the mental health and I was an outpatient counselor before it was named the Mable Thomas Scott Senior Center and she worked there. I remember people like Mr. Bruce and some mill people were doing something, and I asked them, and they said we are delivering Meals on Wheels. So I said that’s a good thing.”

The Gholston’s have two children and three grandchildren, and are members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Gholston was presented a plaque at the end of the Expo. Gholston was appreciative for the award and said that all should strive to volunteer. “I want to thank WNEG and the people of Toccoa. I encourage others to get into it and help out with the senior population by delivering meals on wheels or other community activities. Something is always needed through volunteerism in this county and other counties. I thank you for recognizing me.”

Gholston is striving to start a historical society museum on Spring Street in Toccoa later this year.
