Georgia Power Offers Safety Tips During Severe Weather

This is Lightning Safety Awareness Week and with temperatures rising during the summer months, so does the chance for severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service, there are approximately 25 million lightning strikes in the United States each year.

In Georgia, lightning is the number two weather-related cause of death behind tornadoes, according to Ready Georgia.

That’s why Georgia Power is offering some severe weather safety tips this summer to keep your and your family safe during a storm.
First, never touch any downed wire or low hanging wires.
Also steer clear of fallen trees or tree limbs that have fallen onto power lines, telephone or cable wires.
During a thunderstorm never go near a chain link fence if power lines have fallen on it or lightening strikes it. Electrical current will run through the entire length of the chain link fence.
Also, avoid walking through puddles or flooded areas if there are downed power lines nearby.
Finally, never walk into areas where crews are at work.
If driving near work crews, obey road signs and proceed cautiously.
In addition to personal safety around storms, customers should consider adding surge protection for your home.
Georgia Power offers a surge protection program for its customers.
