Georgia DOL awarded grant to promote equitable access

The U.S. The Department of Labor recently awarded the state of Georgia a $3 million equity grant to promote equitable access to unemployment benefits across the state.

Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson stated, “The grant awarded to the state of Georgia by the USDOL is a testament to our commitment to removing barriers and enhancing access to unemployment insurance benefits for our residents. We understand the importance of addressing various challenges that individuals face when accessing these benefits, and we are grateful for the support of the U.S. Department of Labor and the American Rescue Plan Act to help us achieve these goals.”

One of the key initiatives this equity grant will fund is the Plain Language Initiative. This initiative will ensure the process is accessible for all applicants, regardless of their English proficiency or literacy levels.

Another initiative funded by the grant is the Mobile Unit. Recognizing the digital divide and the challenges faced by individuals with limited or no internet access, the GDOL is working to establish a mobile unit to reach residents across Georgia. This unit will provide in-person support and assistance, making it easier for those needing access to unemployment services.
