GBI Arrests Toccoa Man in Shooting Investigation

Following up on our breaking news story late last night:

On Thursday, April 18, the GBI arrested Cornelius Devaughn Curry, 20, of Toccoa, in Athens-Clarke County during a warrant operation. Curry has been charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault, four counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Certain Crimes, two counts of Aggravated Battery, and four violations of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism Prevention Act.

As reported earlier on WNEG News, Toccoa Police Officers responded shortly past midnight on Sunday, March 31, to reports of shots fired at an address on West Whitman Street across from Emory Johnson Park. At the time, Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize told WNEG News that  two individuals were transported by Stephens County EMS to Stephens County Hospital with gunshot wounds, but were treated and later released.

Following standard protocol, Mize contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist with the investigation, and GBI investigators arrived on scene in the early morning hours Sunday, taking lead in the case.

The GBI’s regional investigative office in Cleveland and the GBI Gang Task Force conducted a multi-faceted investigation. On Thursday, April 18, a search warrant/arrest operation was conducted in Athens-Clarke County near Vintage Court with the assistance of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and multiple GBI work units, including the regional investigative office in Athens. During that operation, police arrested Curry for the above charges.

Nelly Miles, GBI Director of Public Affairs, advised that additional arrests are pending in this case, and said that, once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Mountain Circuit Judicial Circuit District Attorney for prosecution.
