GA Mountains Region Unemployment Rate Unchanged from June to July

The unemployment rate in the Georgia Mountains region was unchanged from June to July at 4.4 percent.

While that rate remained unchanged, the number of initial claims rose by 39.9 percent. And the total number of employed residents in the region also rose.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said an unchanged number means good and bad news.

“We take a look at those numbers behind the rate staying steady, we see a little bit of good and a little bit of bad,” said Butler. “The bad news is we did see initial claims go up by 40 percent, that means we had a little bit under 450 more claims for unemployment insurance in the month of July as opposed to the month of June. However, those are temporary layoffs in nature. The good news in the jobs report for the GA Mountains region has to do with labor force and employment. We saw the labor force increase by over 1300 individuals. The best news is we saw over 1200 individuals gain employment in the month of July.”
