G-DOT: Use Care as Asphalt Paving Begins This Week on I-85 Widening Project

Heading to and from metro Atlanta on I-85 continues to be a challenge for motorists as work to add extra lanes continues.

Georgia DOT crews are beginning the paving phase of the I-85 widening project this week and that will necessitate some closed lanes from Jackson County down to Gwinnett County.

G-DOT spokesperson Katie Strickland tells WNEG News asphalt paving will necessitate single lane closures along I-85 southbound from SR 211 in Barrow County to Hamilton Mill Road in Gwinnett County nightly through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Work will also occur Friday from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday, and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Traffic pacing activity will also occur through Saturday night southbound from SR 211 to Hamilton Mill Road. Pacing will begin at 9 p.m. nightly and continue until 5 a.m. each morning.

The Jesse Cronic Road Bridge over I-85 in Jackson County closed to traffic Monday and is expected to remain closed until December 14, 2019, for bridge reconstruction.

Local drivers are advised to follow the detour routes and to plan accordingly.

Strickland said motorists are advised to obey posted speed limits and traffic control measures inside the project limits.
