Funeral Services today in Toccoa for DNR Capt. Stan Elrod

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa for Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Captain Stan Elrod.

The funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. and burial will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Elrod was struck and killed by a motorist last Thursday evening in Madison County while physically training in Danielsville.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Elrod was struck by a Maroon 2008 Chevy Cobalt while on Hunt Road in Madison County.

Troopers said the driver failed to maintain his lane and struck Elrod on the southbound side near the shoulder.

The driver of the Chevy Cobalt is identified as 31-year old Arvil Hamons, of Danielsville.

He was arrested at the scene and is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, along with other numerous charges.

Elrod had been with the Georgia DNR for 28 years.

Among his many accomplishments, Elrod was a board member of the Outdoor Dream Foundation.

He was a cyclist and participated with the Police Unity Tour and was a founding member of the DNR Honor Guard.

In 1999, Elrod was named Ranger of the Year and in 1996 served on the security team for the 1996 Olympic Games. He was also part of the security team during the G8 Summit.

Originally from Toccoa, Elrod and his family lived in Danielsville where he was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church.

He leaves behind a wife and two sons.

Captain Stanley Curtis Elrod, was 49.
