Funeral Services Pending for Former County Marshall

Funeral services have not yet been announced for former Stephens County Marshall Thomas Bennett.

Bennett was killed Friday in a one-vehicle accident in Toccoa.

According to the Georgia State Patrol incident report, Bennett was driving his 2011 Toyota Tundra south on Currahee Street when he failed to negotiate a curve.

Bennett lost control of his vehicle, ran off the shoulder of the road and struck a utility pole.

His SUV then traveled down an embankment and overturned coming to rest on the railroad tracks facing east.

Bennett sustained life-threatening injuries and died later at the Greenville Health Center.

A witness told the investigating trooper that Bennett’s SUV had initially crossed the center line then jerked to the right, but the report said it is not known exactly why he lost control.

Bennett had worked as a deputy with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office for nine years.

He then served as Stephens County’s Marshal for a total of seven years.

Bennett was currently working as a Campus Police Officer at the Currahee Campus of North Georgia Technical College.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas Bennett was 63.
