Funds Still Available to Help Low-income Families Pay Heating Bills

If you you need help to pay your heating bill this year, there is still money left.

Every year the federal government allocates funds to help low-income families pay their winter electric bills.  That money is distributed to 13 counties in North Georgia through Ninth District Opportunity in Gainesville.

Paula Duley is Ninth District Representative for Stephens County. Duley says there is still monies available for those who need help.

“We’ve got some funding left over from November and we’re trying to finish it out,” she said. “We’ve seen about 1,100 citizens so far, but we still have quite a few more appointments available. We can pull the money from other counties if our county is in need.”

Duley said she is still getting calls from people in Toccoa-Stephens County asking for help.  Now if you do need help, Duley says the funding is based on your income.

“It goes by your income. We need people to bring their social security card for everyone in the family, their picture ID, and their gas and electric bill, and their income for the last 30 days. That’s what we base it on,” Duley said.

You must make an appointment to meet with a Ninth District representative in Stephens County.
