Franklin County, GBI Investigating Shooting Death of Five-Year Old

In Franklin County, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working with the Sheriff’s office in the shooting death of a child.

Franklin County Sheriff’s office Chief Investigator Jimmy LeCroy tells WNEG News it happened Saturday afternoon in the Gumlog Community.

LeCroy said deputies were dispatched to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia to assist a father arriving at the hospital with his child that reportedly had been shot.

At the hospital, officers learned the five-year old child had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest.

The child was airlifted to a trauma center in Atlanta and later died.

Investigators remained on the scene in Gumlog throughout the early Sunday morning hours collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

LeCroy said Franklin County law enforcement is coordinating their efforts with the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, The Franklin County Coroner’s Office, the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services and the Medical Examiner’s Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

He said the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released as they become available.
