Franklin County Deputy Injured in Struggle to Arrest Wanted Maryland Man

A man wanted on multiple felony charges in Maryland is behind bars in Franklin County awaiting extradition and a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy continues to recover from his injuries – that after a traffic stop on I-85 that led to an altercation and arrest.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s office, it happened Tuesday afternoon, November 28 on 85 southbound at mile marker 170.

Franklin County Sheriff Chief Investigator Jimmy LeCroy tells WNEG News, a deputy pulled over a 2009 Honda Acura for a routine traffic stop.

When he asked the driver to see his license, the man said it was in the trunk.

After being allowed to get out of the car to get his license, the driver attacked the deputy, striking him in the face and then tried to grab the deputy’s gun.

The two struggled on the Interstate until other officers arrived on the scene and were able to get the driver under control and arrested.

The driver is identified as 29-year old Steven Michael Allen of Dundalk, Maryland.

At the time of his arrest, Allen was wanted in Maryland for multiple felony charges including, Attempted 1st degree Murder, Attempted 2nd degree Murder, Violent Crimes with a firearm, Assault in the first degree, reckless endangerment and Discharging a firearm.

LeCroy said those charges against Allen were issued in Maryland on November 21st.

Investigators from Maryland were in Franklin County over the weekend and Franklin County investigators are assisting them.

According to Maryland officials, Allen has a lengthy criminal history there that involves violent crimes, crimes toward law enforcement, drug offenses and traffic offenses from the State of Maryland, Florida, and Georgia.

In Franklin County, Allen is charged with Aggravated Assault upon a law enforcement officer, Possession of a firearm by convicted felon, Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by receiving stolen property.

He’s being held in the Franklin County Detention Center without bond and is expected to be extradicted in the coming days .

Malkia Monroe was a passenger in Allen’s vehicle

A passenger in his vehicle, identified as Malkia Ajai Monroe, 24 of Baltimore is charged with theft by receiving and bringing stolen property into the state.

Bond was set for Monroe at $8,000.

LeCroy said during the search of the vehicle a firearm was located that was reported stolen from the state of Maryland.

As a result of the physical altercation between Allen and the Officer, the officer received injuries to the hands, face and arms where medical treatment was required. The officer was treated and released from a local hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.
