Two charges have been filed against former Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Chance Oxner following a crash on Jan. 16 in Hall County.

Georgia State Patrol records show that Oxner, 55, of Mount Airy, has been charged with following too closely and leaving the scene of an accident after he was involved in a rear-end collision.

According to GSP incident reports, Oxner was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on GA 365 in the right lane, and when the Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck in front of the Camry slowed to turn into a driveway, the Camry struck the rear of the Avalanche and both vehicles came to rest off of the roadway.

The driver of the Avalanche and a 15-year-old passenger were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. According to GSP records, Oxner suffered “possibly serious” injuries in the crash, but refused medical transport and left the scene of the crash.

According to Oxner’s records on file with the State of Georgia Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) Oxner has been employed as a Reserve Officer with the Alto Police Department since October 1, 2021. According to Oxner’s POST employment records, he was terminated from his position with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office on June 28, 2021 after 22 years on the force. The termination came after Oxner wrecked a patrol vehicle and tested positive for alcohol. Oxner was charged with DUI less safe, and failure to maintain lane.

According to the POST operations division, as of Jan. 18, there is currently a disciplinary case open against Oxner. Details of open cases are not released.

Oxner was a member of the Joint Mountain Judicial Circuit Narcotics Criminal Investigation and Suppression Team involved in the shooting death of Rev. Jonathan Ayers in Toccoa in 2009.
