Flu Shot Still a Good Idea Experts Say, Despite Lower Effectiveness

As the flu epidemic worsens this winter, many who got a flu shot are wondering how well they’re protected against the dominant strain hitting people right now.

The current strain of the virus that has caused five confirmed deaths in Georgia is the H3N2 virus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, this year’s vaccine is only about 40% or less effective against that strain.

So should you still get a flu shot if you have not already done so?

District Two Public Health spokesman Dave Palmer says it’s still a good idea.

“That’s what experts are recommending,” Palmer said. “If you haven’t gotten the flu shot, go ahead and get it. Flu activity is widespread right now across the state. In the metro area alone, there’s been over 300 hospitalizations.”

Palmer said we still have a ways to go before we’re out of the flu season so it’s not too late to get vaccinated.

The CDC notes older people with weaker immune systems often have a lower protective immune response after flu vaccination compared to younger, healthier people.

However, local health departments such as the Stephens County Health Department offer a stronger dose flu vaccine specifically designed for persons over the age of 65.

If you still need a flu vaccine, you can walk into the Stephens County Health Department and request one Monday – Friday from 8a to 5p.

Cost of a flu vaccine is $25 and most insurance is accepted.
