FIRST SATURDAY NATURE EVENTS AT TUGALOO BEND HERITAGE PARK

This Saturday, August 5, Tugaloo Bend Heritage Park will be holding two First Saturday nature events at the park, located at 2104 Yonah Dam Road.

The first will be a River Bottom Trails Walk from 10 a.m. until noon. The guided walk will explore the river-bottom forest and wetland edges on the Tugaloo, Estatoe and Noyowee trails.

Highlights of the walk will include blooming Swamp Mallow – a showy native hibiscus – at the beaver pond, along with the floating carnivorous plant Common Bladderwort, which is also currently in bloom. Those participating in the walk will get to sample some Pawpaw tree fruit, and enjoy the dragonflies that are currently abundant in the area.

This month’s First Saturday celebration also features Moth Night at the Bend this Saturday from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. where there will be two light sets arranged, one white and one ultraviolet, to attract different types of moths and night-flying insects. The wetland habitat of the Tugaloo Bend Heritage Park is home to hundreds of species of moths, park officials say.

This weekend at the park will also feature Jammin’ at the Bend in the Pavillion from 2 – 4 p.m. on Sunday. Attendees are welcome to bring an instrument and join in, or just come and enjoy the music.
