Construction activity for the I-85 widening project continues and motorists going to and from the metro Atlanta area can expect lane closures all along the construction route beginning tonight.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says asphalt paving will necessitate single lane closures along I-85 in both directions between SR 211 in Barrow County to Hamilton Mill Road in Gwinnett County.

Additionally, bridge construction activity will necessitate single lane closures in both directions between SR 211 and SR 53 in Jackson County.

Work will occur nightly through Friday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Traffic pacing activity will also occur starting tonight through Saturday night.

Pacing activities will take place in both directions between SR 211 and Hamilton Mill Road. Pacing will begin at 9 p.m. nightly and continue until 5 a.m. each morning.

The I-85 Widening projects consists of:
• Expanding the interstate from two to three lanes by adding one lane in each direction in the existing median
• Replacing the grass median with a paved shoulder and median barrier
• Replacing three existing overpass bridges
• Upgrading signing, striping, and the guardrail
Completion of the I-85 widening project is scheduled for sometime in 2020.

Drivers going through the construction area are advised to obey posted speed limits and traffic control measures inside the project limits.
