Erwin wins District 28 State Representative race by 2 votes

The Special May Primary Republican District 28 Re-run election has a winning candidate in Republican businessman Chris Erwin; however, Erwin will have to continue defending his victory after Incumbent Rep. Dan Gasaway plans to demand a recount.

After boards of elections in Stephens, Banks and Habersham counties met Friday and considered provisional ballots, Erwin continued to lead by two votes, defeating Gasaway.

In Stephens County, the provisional ballot that was accepted was for Gasaway.

In Banks County, the two provisional ballots were split between Erwin and Gasaway.

And, in Habersham County, four provisional ballots in favor of Erwin were counted, and three provisional ballots and one absentee ballot went to Gasaway.

After the election results were tabulated on Tuesday, Erwin led by three votes with 3,516 and Gasaway had 3,513.

Following the boards of elections meetings, the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office shows Erwin winning with 3,521 votes to Gasaway’s 3,519.

According to reports, during the meeting with the Habersham County Board of Elections, Gasaway protested two provisional ballots saying the individuals who cast them do not live in House District 28.

Despite Gasaway’s protest, the board accepted those ballots.

However, this election has yet to be put to bed, as Gasaway has announced he plans to request a recount at the prescribed time after the state certifies the election results next week.
