Elections office makes improvements in voting accessability, and announces Logic and Accuracy Testing

Citizens who drove by the Historic Courthouse in Toccoa last month may have noticed work trucks and construction activity at the home of the Stephens County Election offices.

By last week, all three approaches to the entrance facing West Tugaloo Street were handicap-accessible ramps. Previously, only one ramp accessed the building’s doorway, while the other two sidewalks terminated in steps leading to the courthouse doorway.

The Courthouse, which will serve as the voting location for early voting in the upcoming Municipal elections for Martin and Toccoa, needed some updates to make sure voting was accessible to all, Stephens County Elections Supervisor Bruce Carlisle told WNEG News.

He also mentioned the plans to provide adequate handicapped parking during the election, especially during the Saturday voting that will take place concurrently with the Fall Festival.

Additionally, Carlisle said that two heating and AC units in the building are being replaced, and mentioned that the Georgia Department of Homeland Security had recently conducted an inspection of the building, as they are doing at voting locations in all 159 counties in Georgia

He explained that all voting at the Historic Courthouse location will now be held downstairs, as opposed to upstairs in the courtroom.
