Election Update for March 8

The qualifying period for the May 21 General Primary/Nonpartisan election concludes at noon today. 

As of this morning, three new candidates qualified for the locally-relevant races, with Justin Richie qualifying with the democratic party for the Board of Commissioners Post 3 seat, Tabrei Cash qualified to run as a Democrat for a U.S. Representative in House District 9, and June Krise qualified to run as a Democrat for the State Senate District 50 seat. 

Also, the following candidates qualified, as of this morning, to run in the Avalon Special Election. Roger Craven qualified, and will run unopposed, for the Mayoral seat; Dennis Black and Faye L. Craven qualified for the Post 1 seat, and Amy Bohannon and Clay Black qualified for the Post 4 seat. 

The special election for the City of Avalon is to be held in conjunction with the May 21, 2024 General Primary/Nonpartisan election. Election day voting for the Avalon election will be held at the Historic Courthouse located at 37 W. Tugalo Street in Toccoa.

In other election news, the latest voter counts in the Presidential Preference Primary in Stephens County, including votes cast through the end of voting on March 7, a total of 2,230 voters have cast Advance in-person ballots, 240 absentee ballots have been mailed to locally-registered voters, and 183 absentee ballots have been returned. There is 1 provisional ballot recorded.

A final roster of all qualified candidates and a final total for Advanced In Person voting ballot counts will be available Monday. 

A reminder that Advanced In-Person voting concludes today, and will not be held Monday. Election Day voting will be held only at the Historic Courthouse in Downtown Toccoa, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Also, as reported earlier by WNEG News, the Stephens County Board of Elections and Registration will meet for a Special Called Meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 11 at 37 West Tugalo Street to begin Early Processing of absentee ballots for the March 12 Presidential Preference Primary.
