Eastanollee Family taken to local hospital after exposure to toxic gas

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Indian Drive, in Eastanollee on Sunday in response to multiple unresponsive people.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, his deputies arrived on scene along with Stephens County EMS, Stephens County Fire Services and Medical First Responders.

Deputies approached the residence and could smell a strong pungent chemical odor coming from inside the house.

Emergency personnel immediately entered and removed the family: a mother, father, son and daughter, and a juvenile from inside the home.

Several of the family members were transported by EMS to Stephens County Hospital, while two other family members drove to Stephens County Hospital.

Emergency personnel were able to find the origin of the chemical odor, and determined the chemical agents were used the evening before for pest control.

Shirley says it was determined the chemical agents were Boric Acid and Deltamethrin.

The chemicals were accidentally combined which over time created a toxic gas.

All emergency personnel exposed to the toxic gases were cleared medically at Stephens County Hospital from the exposure.

Deputies, paramedics, Stephens County Fire personnel and first responders who were exposed reported minor side effects including headaches, cough, shortness of breath, and sore throat.

After everyone was treated at the scene, as well as at the hospital, the Eastanollee Fire Department ventilated the residence properly to prevent future exposure.
