Early voting continues through Friday

Early voting continues this week in Stephens County.

Residents will cast early ballots in the runoff elections for Secretary of State and Public Service Commissioner, and some eligible voters will cast ballots for the District 28 State Representative Re-run election.

Stephens County Registrar Bill Cochran told WNEG News, on Wednesday, that absentee, by-mail ballots for the runoff election would be delivered over the weekend.

Cochran reminds voters that early voting will run through Friday, November 30.

“The early voting for the state run-off begins Monday (November 26), at the Stephens County Courthouse Annex,” Cochran said. “[Advance voting] runs now through November 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Anyone that wants an absentee ballot that does not fall into the categories of disabled or elderly can request an application at any time starting Monday (November 26).”

Meantime, early voting continues this week for the May Primary re-run of the House District 28 race between incumbent Republican Representative Dan Gasaway and challenger Republican businessman Chris Erwin.

Voters in House District 28, which includes Banks, Stephens and part of Habersham counties must decide December 4th who wins that race.

However, not all registered voters will be able to cast a ballot in the District 28 race because of the Judge’s ruling at a hearing in September.

As part of the ruling, in order to vote in the May 22 Primary re-run voters must have polled the Republican ballots, have been given an improper ballot and those who were eligible on May 22 and who at the time of this election continue to be eligible. If, someone who has since moved out of the district, then they are not qualified to vote in the re-run.

Also excluded, are those who voted on the Democratic ballot in May, anyone who has been convicted of a felony since the May 22 election, and those who registered to vote after the May 22 Primary.

Cochran said they will have a list from the Secretary of State’s office of eligible voters for the House District 28 Special Primary.

And as a reminder, the November 6th run-off elections and the House District 28 Special Primary are two separate races with two separate ballots.

So beginning this week, if you go to vote early, you will have to indicate to the Registrar which races you want to cast ballots in.
