E-SPLOST Passes; Looney, Stovall reelected

The results are in for the Special Election for Stephens County residents and the Town of Martin Municipal Election.

Residents of Stephens County voted and approved the Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for the Stephens County School System.

The E-SPLOST resolution will allow the school system to continue to collect a one percent sales and use tax for the purpose of financing certain capital outlay projects for education purposes.

The one percent sales tax will automatically end if the school system reaches $26 million of net proceeds by the tax.

789 Stephens County residents voted in favor of the resolution with 262 voting against it.

In the Martin Town Council election, incumbents Roger Looney and Sandy Stovall and newcomer Diane Cole were vying for two seats.

41 Martin residents voted for Looney.

37 Martin residents voted for Stovall.

30 Martin residents voted for Cole.

Looney and Stovall have been elected for the two posts.
