DPH to hold off on administering 3rd doses of COVID vaccines

Following the FDA’s authorization of an additional COVID vaccine dose for immunocompromised individuals, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is now recommending that certain patients with weakened immune systems receive an additional dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

The recommendation does not include the Johnson and Johnson vaccine at this time.

The Georgia Department of Public Health is awaiting guidance from the CDC that clearly defines what conditions make an individual eligible for an additional dose of vaccine.

According to District 2 Public Health Public Information Officer Natasha Young, they aren’t offering the third dose just yet.

Young says once the CDC clearly defines those conditions, the DPH will establish statewide protocols for health departments administering additional doses of the COVID vaccine.

She says, until then, the DPH will hold off on administering third doses.

Young says anyone seeking additional doses of the vaccine should contact their healthcare provider for guidance and recommendations.
