Downed Tree traps family inside home

By Jessica Waters

On Saturday evening, July 1, the Toccoa Fire Department responded to a call regarding a tree that had fallen in the 100 block of Emily Street. The tree had fallen on the roof of a home and had trapped the residents inside the home, according to Fire Chief Jeff Haslup.

Arriving within four minutes of the 911 call, Toccoa Fire units worked to remove residents from the building safely while working around the large tree that had crashed through the roof with enough force to break structural beams, walls and floors.  Working for more than one and half hours, firefighters and EMS personnel were able to get all family members safely from the  home, including one person who was trapped under a portion of the tree.

Haslup told WNEG news that firefighters used air bags to extricate the victim from under the tree. After extrication, the individual was turned over to EMS. No report of serious injuries were noted on the incident report.

WNEG News will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
