Dove Hunting Season Opens, Saturday

Georgia’s dove hunting season opens this Saturday, Sept. 1 and runs through the 16.

Opportunities to hunt dove will also be available this year in October from the 13th through the 31, and again in November from the 22 through January 15.

More than 50 public dove fields, including opportunities on private land will be made available to the public through a U.S. Department of Agriculture program called the Voluntary Public Access/Habitat Incentive Program.

Shooting hours are from noon until sunset on opening day and one-half hour before sunrise to sunset for the remainder of the season dates.

DNR Law Enforcement Officer Craig Fulghum says dove hunting is a great event for young hunters.

“It is unofficially the start of hunting season for many hunters in the state of Georgia. It is a time where many hunters start, and a lot of kids start during this time. That’s something that Georgia DNR are real big on, is the children being involved in the outdoors. This is a great way to introduce your children.”

In addition to obtaining a valid hunting license in Georgia, anyone at least 12-year-old and up who is hunting for the first time must complete a Georgia Hunter Education Course before they can legally hunt in the state.

Hunters in need of the Georgia hunter education course have two options. They can go online to take the course or do it in a classroom environment. The four available online courses each require a fee (from $9.95–$24.95), but all are “pass or don’t pay” courses. However, the classroom course is free of charge.
