Emergency crews from Habersham and Rabun County as well as Tallulah Gorge State Park are being praised for working five hours Thursday afternoon, April 22, to recover a body from 300-feet down the Tallulah Gorge.

Mark McKinnon, Public Affairs Officer for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Law Enforcement Division says they received a call around midday on Thursday, that someone had fallen from Overlook 2 at the Gorge.

He says when the Game Wardens along with Habersham and Rabun County’s personnel arrived, they realized that someone had gone off the side from that overlook area.

They were able to spot the victim from the top and the Habersham and Rabun county High Angle Teams were able to get down and recover the victim.

The person was deceased, but they were able to bring her out and give some closure to her family.

Personnel from Habersham County Emergency Services, Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Tallulah Falls Fire Department, Tallulah Falls Police Department, Rabun County Fire Services, DNR Park Rangers, Habersham County Search and Rescue, and DNR Aviation worked the incident.  Crews removed the body with a rope-rigging system.

The Georgia DNR is conducting an investigation into the death.
