District 28 Representative Chris Erwin says Stephens County has little to worry about with upcoming reapportionment

District 28 Representative Chris Erwin recently sat down with WNEG News to discuss the Georgia General Assembly’s special session regarding reapportionment.

Following the completion of the 2020 Census, the Georgia General Assembly scheduled a special session to redraw district lines to match the population numbers.

Erwin explained that Stephens County has little reason to worry about the county’s district lines being altered.

Erwin said he’s going to fight for his district to remain the same.

As WNEG News previously reported, both the Toccoa City Commission and the Stephens County Board of Commissioners adopted resolutions expressing their concerns and needs for Stephens County to remain one voting district.

Toccoa Vice Mayor Jeanette Jamieson led the efforts by reminding the Toccoa City Commission that during the last Census, Habersham County saw a portion of its south end removed.

“The last time, they took a certain number of the south end of Habersham County. I don’t want them taking a certain number off of the western side of Stephens County. It’s hard enough for a small county to hold their own. I would just appreciate very much if you would get in touch when them and let them know that we would appreciate them protecting our lines,” she said.

When the Stephens County Board of Commissioners adopted its resolution regarding reapportionment, Chairperson Michelle Ivester explained that both Erwin and State Senator Bo Hatchet are confident that Stephens County won’t be divided.
