Deadline Approaching for Youth Waterfowl Hunt Drawing

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, will conduct youth waterfowl hunts at the Richard B. Russell Project during the months of December and January for participants 9-16 years old.

The dates for the hunts are dependent on the weather and arrival of the waterfowl. Once dates are determined, those who are selected during a random drawing will be notified the week prior to the hunt they are drawn for. To enter the drawing, call Brandon Dickey at 800-944-7207, ext. 3408, at the Russell Project Office, no later than 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1, 2023.

For all hunts, a parent or guardian must accompany youth participants. The parent/guardian can hunt along with the youth hunter.  Prior to hunting, all hunters, the youth and their parents/guardian, must check in at the lake project office at 4144 Russell Dam Drive, Elberton, Ga., the day of the hunt and must be licensed in accordance with existing Georgia Hunting Regulations, including the Migratory Bird Hunting License and have the required state and federal waterfowl stamps. All state regulations and bag limits will be strictly enforced. Legal firearms and ammunition for waterfowl hunting are identified in the Georgia Hunting Regulations for Waterfowl.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Division, website, the Georgia Migratory Bird Stamp is required for all migratory bird hunters (doves, ducks, geese, woodcock, snipe, coots, rails, or gallinules) who are 16 and older, even if a hunting license is not required. This stamp is how Georgia participates in the federal Harvest Information Program (HIP), and hunters must obtain a new Georgia Migratory Bird Stamp each season. A Federal Duck Stamp is still required for hunters ages 16 and older if hunting duck and geese. Resident youth hunters, ages 15 and under, get a Youth Sportsman’s License.”
