Currahee Military Weekend Back for 2021

In 2020, many events around the world were canceled due to the pandemic, including events here in Stephens County. One of those canceled events included Currahee Military Weekend.

This past weekend, the Stephens County Historical Society announced the event will be returning this year. The 2021 Currahee Military Weekend is scheduled for October 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Stephens County Historical Society President Steve Tilley says the event is still in some planning stages, but will go on. “We are still in the planning process, but there will be a Currahee Military Weekend. The Veterans Parade will be a little different this year. Participants in that parade can be children, family, or friends of a Camp Toccoa veteran and for a donation they get a picture of that veteran on a poster, and they get to carry that picture in the parade.”

Tilley says though the events have not been finalized, some will be familiar. “There will be a book signing, the re-enactors are excited about coming back. So it looks like we will have a good turnout of WWII re-enactors. We are planning. It is a little late to get started, but we are having one.”

Since the pandemic, the Stephens County and Currahee Military Museums were closed, and then operated on limited weekend hours Thursday-Saturday. As of Monday, the museums are now operating six days a week, and will now be open Monday-Saturday from 10 A.M.-4 P.M. Tilley says planning for the Currahee Military Weekend and the daily opening of the museums is taking some planning. “There have been some logistical difficulties in planning both. With the opening six days a week, in the past we have used volunteers that would work three hour shifts. Those volunteers have decided to not participate yet. It is hard to get them back so that has been a little bit of a problem. So we need volunteers.”

Tilley says that they would love to hear from anyone that would like to help with the museum hours or the weekend event. ‘If they would contact the museum and leave their name and number, we can be back in touch to see if they would be willing to do whatever we need. We don’t know exactly what that will be with CMW just yet. It won’t be anything overwhelming and hopefully something they would enjoy.”

Tilley says the contact number to call for Currahee Military Weekend or for hours at the museum call 706-282-5055.
