Crowd Gathers at Totally Toccoa Event

A crowd gathered yesterday for the Totally Toccoa event hosted by Main Street that was held downtown to celebrate the solar eclipse.

The event included live music by the Rose of New Orleans, dancing, food and bouncy houses for the kids. There was also a live stream of NASA’s eclipse coverage in the historic Ritz Theatre for visitors to enjoy.

Main Street Manager Christian Hamilton said the event had a great turn out.

“We had no idea how many people we were going to see at Totally Toccoa,” said Hamilton. “We did our best in guessing, we thought we could see between 300-8,000. We think we have at least 3,000 here right now. We gave our glasses away in 15 minutes, so it’s a wonderful event. The band is playing, vendors selling, it’s very crowded.”

The crowd was filled with locals and visitors alike and Doug Conkle, who lives in Toccoa, said he enjoyed seeing everyone gather together for this event.

“Well I think what’s neat is how many folks have come from all over the world and even the U.S. here to enjoy the total eclipse,” said Conkle. “It’s fun being a relatively new home owner here in Toccoa to see folks coming to our little town.”
The partial eclipse reached Toccoa around 1:07 p.m. and totality around 2:36 p.m.
