County Officials hope to speed up reopening of W. Currahee Street

County officials are working towards nailing down a date to reopen the portion of West Currahee Street, formally Dicks Hill Parkway, that has been closed since December 2017.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers says while the county waits on the arrival of the guardrail material, so that the contractor can install the guardrail, they have worked out an approved temporary barrier solution with Hayward Baker Incorporated, in hopes of opening the road sooner.

The date for the road to be reopened all depends on how quickly the temporary barriers are delivered and put in place.

As of this report, Ayers says the temporary barriers should arrive in the coming days, and placement will begin shortly after.

In December of 2017, the Stephens County Board of Commissioners made the decision to immediately close a portion of road to all traffic near 4989 W. Currahee Street.

At the time, the board attributed its decision to close the road to the safety of motorist being compromised.

In April 2018, the commission awarded a bid to Hayward Baker Incorporated for the design build to repair the slope in the amount of $2.1 million, dependent on funding from the State of Georgia.

In June, Stephens County was awarded $800,000 from the Department of Transportation to fund a portion of the project.

Then, in September, the Commissioners let the contract with Hayward Baker Inc. and since then, Hayward Baker Inc. has been working towards the completion of the slope stabilization project.
