County, City offices closed for MLK Day

Toccoa routes for garbage and recyclables scheduled to be picked up on Monday, January 15th will be picked up on Tuesday, January 16th.

Commercial garbage will be picked up as usual, but yard waste and other items will not be picked up.

The Toccoa Police and Fire Departments will be on duty. Utility Department employees, as well as employees from the Public Works Department, will be on call for emergency situations.

The Links Golf Course will operate as usual, with normal operating hours of 8 a.m. until sunset.

All Stephens County departments and offices will also be closed, with the exception of public safety personnel who will remain on duty, and public works staff who will be on call in the case of emergencies. 

Stephens County Schools and offices will also be closed on Monday, January 15, to honor the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday, as will all public libraries, including the Toccoa/Stephens County Public Library. 

All state and federal governmental offices, such as the Department of Driver Services, Social Security, Employment Security and other area and regional offices will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.  All U.S. Postal Service offices will be closed, and no mail or packages will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service on Monday. 

According to company websites, Federal Express will be making deliveries. United Parcel Service will open limited store locations on Monday, but its domestic ground, air and international services will be closed, and banks will be closed for the national holiday. 

Also, a reminder that The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees at Lake Hartwell recreation areas in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day next Monday, Jan. 15. Day Use fees at J. Strom Thurmond recreation areas will also be waived, as the Corps is instituting the fee-free day at more than 2,850 Army Corps-operated recreation areas nationwide.

The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and day use areas. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities and events. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on Army Corps of Engineers’ lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas they manage.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday honors the civil rights leader, who was born Jan. 15, 1929. Monday would have been his 95th birthday. The holiday is always observed on the third Monday of January.
