Commissioner Bell appointed to NACo Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee

Stephens County Commissioner Dennis Bell has been appointed to the National Association of Counties’ Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee.

Each year, the National Association of Counties’ various steering committees review public policy issues and federal legislation and make recommendations to the N.A.Co. Board of Directors, leading to the development of policy that the organization publishes and uses to deliver the unified county government’s message to the administration, Congress and the public.

The Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee is responsible for policy research and matters regarding criminal justice and public safety systems, including law enforcement, courts and corrections systems, homeland security, community crime prevention, juvenile justice and delinquency prevention, emergency management, fire prevention and control, and civil disturbances.

In a letter to Bell from Mary Jo McGuire, President of the National Association of Counties, she states “National Committee membership is a serious responsibility that takes commitment, but it is also a rewarding experience. N.A.Co’s strength is in our committees, and your active participation will add to that strength. The expertise and engagement of our steering committee members like you is a major reason why Congress and federal agencies often look to N.A.Co for feedback on legislative policy decisions being made in Washington D.C.”

She states that, as a steering committee member, Bell will have the opportunity to share information with representatives from other Georgia county governments, and to learn from them.

The National Association of Counties’ stated mission is to advocate county priorities in federal policymaking, promote optimal county policies and practices, and expand knowledge networks among county governments.
