Cocaine discovered during traffic stop

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said that some crack cocaine was uncovered after a traffic stop, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to Shirley, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office performed a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of South Sage Street and Alexander Street for an equipment violation.

While Sheriff’s Deputy Donnie Brantley was speaking to and identifying the occupants, he noticed, what he knew to be, a strong odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle.

Brantley then began to question the occupants about the odor.

Passenger Christopher Lacey, 31, of Toccoa, told Brantley that he had smoked some marijuana earlier and still had a “little ‘weed’” on his persons.

When asked by Brantley, Lacy handed over seven small bags of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.

According to Shirley, because of the marijuana that was uncovered, the vehicle was searched.

During the search, the deputy located a white, rock-like substance that field-tested positive to be “crack” cocaine.

Lacy claimed ownership of the narcotics and was taken to the Stephens County Jail where he was charged with possession of Marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of cocaine.

He is currently being held on a $35,000 bond.
