City to Apply for Grant to Upgrade Downtown Passage Way

The City of Toccoa is expected to approve a plan to apply for another Georgia Tourism Product Development Grant.

At their work session Monday, City Manager Billy Morse told the Board of Commissioners the grant, if approved, would go to renovate an area downtown.

“We propose that we submit a grant to the Georgia Economic Development Authority for a tourism product development grant to revitalize the city passage way downtown,” Morse said. “This revitalization would include concrete floor staining, new signage, bistro-style lighting and bathroom upgrades.”

The total amount of the grant is $10-thousand dollars, which would be matched by the City, according to Morse.

Morse noted the passage way gets a lot of use by people coming downtown, not only for shopping and going to restaurants, but also for events such as the Ida Cox Music Fest.

Toccoa Main Street Manager Christian Hamilton told the Board renovating the downtown passage way was, in his opinion, the best use of the grant monies.

The Board plans to vote on the grant application at their next regular meeting Monday evening.
