Charges Pending Against Tractor-Trailer Driver in Tuesday’s I-85 Wreck

Charges are pending against the driver of an 18-wheeler authorities say caused a four-vehicle wreck on I-85 Tuesday morning.

The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is investigating the wreck on I-85 that involved two tractor trailers and two passenger cars.

According to GSP Hartwell Post Corporal Mize, the wreck happened around 8a near the 177 Exit during heavy traffic on I-85 Northbound.

“Traffic congestion caused vehicles to slow down in the northbound lanes,” Cpl Mize said. “A tractor-trailer was traveling behind several of the vehicles. It struck a passenger car, which struck another passenger car. The driver of the tractor-trailer then tried to go around another tractor-trailer, which also became involved (in the wreck). The occupant of the first vehicle that was struck by the first tractor-trailer suffered injuries and was transported to Greenville.”

Corporal Mize said that victim suffered serious injuries, but their current condition is not known.

He said they were the only person in the wreck to be injured.

Traffic was backed up for hours on I-85 as authorities and crews worked the accident scene.

The name of the tractor-trailer driver who allegedly caused the wreck has not yet been released.

Mize said all lanes were back open by just before noon Tuesday.
