Bulldogs Edge Indians, 9-7

Stephens County comes up just short in region football play against rival Hart County.

The Indians stopped Hart County twice in the second half on downs, but could not put any points on the board after halftime, falling to the Bulldogs, 9-7 in Hartwell.

Indians’ Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said it’s a tough loss, but Stephens County will have to bounce back.

“They fought to the end,” said Tankersley. “We just made some mistakes that got us, but how we deal with adversity is what will eventually define us as a team.”

Hart County opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 30-yard field goal. Javin Gordon put the Indians on top early in the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown run. However, Hart County scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession to take a 9-7 lead into halftime.

Neither team scored in the second half as the defenses controlled the game.

With the loss, Stephens County falls to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the region. Hart County moves to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the region with the win.

The Indians will return home this coming Friday to play Oconee County in another Region 8-AAA game. Kick-off Friday in Toccoa will be 7:30 p.m. with coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. with the Indian Tailgate Show.
