A Toccoa man has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday, April 4.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, in the early morning hours of Sunday, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 150 Welcome Road, in Eastanollee regarding shots fired.

While deputies were in-route, 911 dispatch reported that a subject had been shot and the suspect had left in a white Ford Ranger.

As deputies responded to the shots fire call, they observed a white Ford Ranger parked at the Citgo gas station at 1200 Big A Road.  Units with the Toccoa Police Department responded to the gas station and detained the suspect, allowing backup deputies to continue to the scene.

Upon arrival of deputies at the scene, they located a gunshot victim in the driveway where they began first aid, but the victim succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old Demorest resident Cody Jacob Stancil.

Shirley instructed investigator Sean McGuire to contact the GBI to assist in the investigation.

Agents from the Cleveland Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded.

The investigation revealed that there was an altercation at 150 Welcome Road. One shot was fired by Spencer Ray Reason, age 19, of Toccoa.

Toccoa Police Officers notified deputies that Reason was the driver of the white Ford Ranger. Further investigation revealed that Reason was in possession of 38 revolver, as well as one spent casing located on his person.

Investigator McGuire obtained a search warrant for the crime scene, as well as the suspects Ford Ranger. Once the GBI Agents arrived, the crime scene was processed and witnesses were interviewed.

Shirley said GBI Agents were able to determine that an argument occurred at the residence that ultimately ended in a shot being fired by Reason, striking the victim Stancil who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Spencer Ray Reason was placed under arrest charged with Murder and Possession of a firearm during the commission of a Felony. He is in the Stephens County Jail. His bond was denied during a first appearance hearing Monday.
