Bohannon wins Rick Perkins Award for 2018

North Georgia Technical College recently announced Stacie Bohannon, Medical Assisting Instructor and Health Sciences Department Chair, as the 2018 Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction winner.

The Rick Perkins Award honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s most outstanding instructors.

The award is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields.

Instructors are nominated by their peers and submit their answer to a single question: “Why I chose to teach in technical education.”

The answers are reviewed by a panel of judges, and a winner is chosen at each technical college.

Bohannon has taught at NGTC since 2007, after graduating from the Medical Assisting Program and a four-year stint working in the field.

“I chose to come back and teach in technical education because I wanted to give people a career they love, not just a job,” says Bohannon. “I want them to find as much fulfillment in their work as I do as a result of attending a technical college.”

For winning at the college level, Bohannon was presented with a plaque from NGTC and a cash prize on behalf of the Rotary Club of Union County.

Bohannon will attend the next round of competition later this year with hopes of becoming the state winner. “Winning the Rick Perkins award means so much to me because I was nominated by one of my peers. I feel like if a co-worker takes time to give you that recognition, even if you don’t win the award, you have won in so many other ways,” says Bohannon.

“Stacie has always supported her students and is an advocate for her students,” says Christy Bivins, Dean for Academic Affairs. “We’re lucky to have Stacie here; she’s a wonderful instructor and she’s passionate about the success of her students both inside and outside the classroom.”

North Georgia Technical College is the first technical college in the state of Georgia, and is part of the Technical College System of Georgia.

Its main campus is in Clarkesville, with additional campuses in Toccoa and Blairsville.
