Board of Education meeting tonight

The Stephens County Board of Education will meet tonight for the Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the district office, 191 Big A School Road in Toccoa. The public is invited to attend.

The agenda for tonight’s meeting includes the announcement of the school system’s monthly Spirit of Stephens awards, which recognizes a classified and a certified employee each month. The award recipients are nominated each month by fellow employees.

The criteria for nomination state that the nominee must demonstrate a strong commitment to student success, encourage teamwork and assist other staff members, inspire others with a positive outlook and attitude, and perform job responsibilities consistently and professionally.

Next on the agenda is the presentation of the monthly budget report and SPLOST activity report for the month of July, as well as approval of the monthly fundraiser and field trip requests.

Board members will be asked to approve the purchase of software for the Middle School and VR headsets, also for the Middle School. A request to dispose of surplus property from the Middle School is also on the agenda.

Board members will hear the monthly facilities update, and discuss – and possibly act on – several technology department expenditures, including firewall replacement, surveillance servers for the Middle and High Schools, and funding for Microsoft licensing.

Also listed on the agenda for tonight’s meeting are “Approval of Series 2023 Bond Resolution,” the Board Training Plan for FY24, and three policy updates. Policies with pending amendments include the Medication, Graduation and Financial Reports policies. The proposed revisions will be available for review on wnegradio.com.

The Board is expedited to enter executive session following the meeting to discuss “personnel” issues – the Board typically approves the monthly Human Resources report following the executive session.

The next meetings of the Stephens County Board of Education will be a September 14 work session, followed by the September regular meeting on Tuesday, September 19.
