Banks Co. Shooter Caught by Franklin Co. Sheriff’s Dept.

Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas is detailing how his deputies were able to help catch the man who shot a Banks County Sheriff’s deputy last week.

That man, identified as 37-year-old Avery Richard of Atlanta was later shot and killed in a shootout with FBI agents in Atlanta Saturday.

Sheriff Thomas said a tip on a wreck that happened Tuesday in Franklin County led his officers to the vital information.

He said a search of the area near the site of that wreck led officers to a house in Carnesville where one of the Banks County car-jacking suspects lived.

Thomas said the man, later identified as Dustin Terrell Heuatt, continued to refuse to give any ID but as a result of their conversation Thomas was able to connect the wrecked truck to Richard, the prime suspect in Banks County.

However, that all took place the night before the carjacking at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce.

On Wednesday afternoon, Thomas said he received a look out from the Banks County Sheriff’s office regarding the carjacking and kidnapping along with a sketch of the suspect.

That’s when Thomas said he made the connection between that incident the suspects he talked to in Carnesville the night before.

Heuatt was arrested Thursday  night and charged with Aggravated Assault.

He is currently being held in the Banks County Jail.
