Bad Wreck Stops Traffic on Highway 17/365

Life flight helicopter comes in for landing at Hwy 17/365 wreck Monday

A stretch of Hwy17/365 on the Habersham County line was closed for a time late Monday morning after a vehicle slammed into an 18-wheeler.

It happened about 11:30a on the soutbound side of Highway 17/365 near Rock Road just inside the Habersham County line.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley tells WNEG News his deputies happened to be close to the accident and were first on the scene.

Toccoa Fire Department trucks, EMT’s, and troopers from the Georgia State Patrol Toccoa Post arrived within minutes.

The Sheriff said a man driving a company van out of Woodstock slammed into the rear of the 18-wheeler.

That driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital where his condition is not known.  The name of the driver has not yet been released.

Traffic on Hwy 17/365 was stopped in both directions to make way for the life flight helicopter and to allow investigators and crews time to clear the scene.

No word on what caused the van driver to hit the tractor-trailer.
