Avalon Mayor talks about New Road

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners urge residents to reach out to the officials of the city of Avalon regarding the closure of New Road.

Commissioner Dennis Bell explained during the recent County meeting that he had received a number of complaints from individuals regarding New Road being closed.

However, on May 9, 2017, the County Commission, upon the request of the Avalon City Council per Councilman George Dean, abandoned New Road.

During last year’s meeting, the County Commissioners were told by Dean several times that the road would not be closed.

Avalon Mayer Linda Dean explained that New Road is not closed to locals, but is closed to weekend travelers.

Saying “We just don’t want all that traffic on our road.”

Mayor Dean added that the road has not been maintained in years, and it isn’t designed to have over 600 vehicles use it during the course of a weekend.

Mayor Dean continued to explain that the City of Avalon would be turning over the deed for the road to the residents, which include Mayor Dean and Councilman George Dean, of New Road.

When asked how the city would police non-locals from using the road, the Mayor explained that they would continue to use the signs which are currently posted.
