ASI Southeast donates 50 Desks for Stephens County’s Virtual students

A local industry makes donation to benefit students attending Stephens County Schools virtually.

On Friday, ASI, delivered 50 desks to students throughout the county to ensure they have a designated space for schoolwork.

ASI Southeast Executive Vice President and COO Doug Hitchens told WNEG News they heard about the need and wanted to help the community.

“We realize our responsibility to the community. 2020 has been a terrible year, and we’ve been thinking about ways we could help. We’re hearing stories, even among our own employees, about kids doing their schoolwork at home, doing it on their bed, doing it on the kitchen table, and nowhere to really do the schoolwork. It’s enough of a distraction having to do it outside of the classroom, and so we thought we would come up with an idea to help the children,” he said. “So, our team got together, and we thought that we could build desks for kids. And so, what we’ve done, this initiative here, the employees designed these desks and we put them together to give them to all the students here in Stephens County. That’s the goal here it’s just to help.”

ASI Southeast Manufacturing Manager Stephen Wallace tells WNEG News that one employee Javen Richie was instrumental in the desk design.

Richie was one of the first students ASI hired from Stephens County High School’s Work-Based Learning program a few years ago.

Wallace said they were able to use left-over material from a previous job to build the desks.
