Area Sheriff races heat up

In Stephens County, it is now a three-way race for Sheriff in the upcoming election cycle as a third candidate announced his intention to run in a Facebook post on Jan. 1.

Harold McCroskey, a long time law enforcement officer, posted on Monday, stating, “After consideration and many prayers I am announcing my candidacy for Sheriff of Stephens county. All of your votes and support will be greatly appreciated.”

Previously, Dennis Bell and Rusty Fullbright announced their candidacy for Stephens County Sheriff; Sheriff Randy Shirely has not announced whether he will be running for reelection.

In neighboring Franklin County, former Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy Mitch Murphy has announced his candidacy for Sheriff.

In a post on his Facebook page, he stated, “With an illustrious 36-year tenure at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, I am excited to announce that I will be running in the upcoming Sheriff’s election for Franklin County. I bring a wealth of experience and dedication to the realms of law enforcement and public service. My journey within the department has included working for 3 different sheriffs and has seen me excel in diverse roles, including that of a Patrol Deputy, Investigator, and Shift Supervisor, showcasing my adaptability and leadership.”

Murphy retired Tuesday and made his announcement Tuesday night.

Murphy is the third candidate to formally announce his intention to run for Sheriff in Franklin County.

In October, Former Georgia State Patrol Post 52 Commander Scott Andrews announced his intention to run for Franklin County Sheriff.

That announcement was followed in December by an announcement of candidacy by former Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Stovall.

Stovall is being endorsed by Sheriff Steve Thomas who said in December that after 20 years as Sheriff, he would not run for re-election in 2024.

Qualifying for the Sheriff’s race takes place in March. The Election is May 21.
