Anderson man charged with homicide, DUI after fatal accident

An Anderson, South Carolina man faces a number of charges including homicide after his vehicle fatally injured a pedestrian.

According to troopers with the Georgia State Patrol, on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 30, Kenneth David Epps, 33, of Anderson, South Carolina, was driving, a 2003 Ford Taurus, in the southbound lane of Avalon Road when he crossed the centerline and left the roadway.

Epps vehicle continued traveling south through a small field striking multiple trees and bushes.

His vehicle came to rest after hitting John Milton Cantrell, 80, of Toccoa, who was in a private yard on his riding lawn mower.

The impact ejected Cantrell from the lawn mower, throwing him in the path of Epps’ vehicle.

On their arrival, troopers discovered Epps to be under the influence of alcohol.

He was then arrested and charged with first degree felony homicide by vehicle, DUI, too fast for conditions, reckless driving, prescription drugs not in original container, failure to maintain lane, and possession of a schedule II controlled substance.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on Thursday, Epps remains in custody at the Stephens County Jail.
