Currahee Military Weekend is this weekend

One of Toccoa-Stephens County’s premier events will be this weekend with the 17th annual Currahee Military Weekend.

This year’s weekend will include the Savannah Rivers Production “Salute To The Troops” on Thursday night at 7 P.M. at the Ritz Theater.

Friday’s events will include the Chamber Barbecue from 11:30-1 and USO Swing Dance at 7 P.M. at the Toccoa National Guard Armory.

Saturday’s events will include the Currahee Challenge Run/Walk at Currahee Mountain on Saturday morning, the Exhibit Dedication to Col. Bob Sink, leader of the 506th, at 10 A.M. at the museum, and the Veterans parade in Downtown Toccoa beginning at 1 P.M. followed by a battle re-enactment called Operation Market Garden at Doyle, Pond, and Alexander Streets.

New to the event this year will be a food vendors, informational booths, and a Quarter Faire for activities from 10-6 on Saturday. The Quarter Faire is similar to the Penny Faire during the 1940’s that raised money to support the military effort.

The Currahee Banquet is Saturday night at Camp Toccoa in the Currahee Pavilion. Stephens County Historical Society Executive Director Brenda Carlan says it is a special event.

Carlan says that tickets are available for the event but the deadline is approaching.

The weekend will also feature memorabilia shows, WWII encampments, and military displays.

The Currahee Military Weekend ends on Sunday with a memorial service at Camp Toccoa.
