W. Currahee Slope Project nearing completion

The portion of West Currahee Street, formerly Dicks Hill Parkway, that underwent severe remediation is now nearing completion.

According to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, the slope stabilization project will be completed once the guardrail has been installed.

The project was originally scheduled to be completed on May 6; however, due to the excessive rainfall Stephens County has seen this past winter, the completion date has been pushed back.

At this time, that date has yet to be set.

In December of 2017, the Stephens County Board of Commissioners made the decision to immediately close a portion of road to all traffic near 4989 W. Currahee Street.

At the time, the board attributed its decision to close the road to the safety of motorist being compromised.

Because of how complex the project would be, the county was unable to complete the slope remediation in-house; which, created greater challenges and halted the progress.

In April 2018, the commission awarded a bid to Hayward Baker Incorporated for the design build to repair the slope in the amount of $2.1 million, dependent on funding from the State of Georgia.

In June, Stephens County was awarded $800,000 from the Department of Transportation to fund a portion of the project.

Then, in September, the Commissioners let the contract with Hayward Baker Inc. and since then, Hayward Baker Inc. has been working towards the completion of the slope stabilization project.
