Ten Injured in Multi-Vehicle Accident on Big A

More details are in from Georgia State Patrol on the multi-vehicle accident on Big A road at Rothell Road Extension in Toccoa on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened just after 3 P.M. Officials had to detour traffic and it took several hours to investigate and clear the scene.

According to reports, the driver of a White SUV pulled into the path of a Morgan Concrete truck driven by 23-year-old Bailey Durden of Toccoa. Durden attempted to avoid the SUV and struck a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 33-year-old Elizabeth Phillips. The impact of the crash sent the Malibu into the Southbound lanes on Big A Road causing it to strike a Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 69-year-old Bruce Pruitt of Eastanollee sending the pickup into the northbound lanes and striking a Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 27-year-old Tabetha Kawelo of Martin.

According to GSP, the driver of the White SUV fled the scene with the make and model unknown.

Pruitt was airlifted and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The family of four in the Malibu, Elizabeth Phillips, Joseph Phillips, age 35, Aiden Phillips, age 5, and Charlie Phillips, age 3, were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia.

Kawelo was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Four children were also in the vehicle with Kawelo. They are identified as Robert Kawelo, age 6, Caroline Kawelo, age 3, Donnie Kawelo, age 2, and Bryan Boreland, age 6. The children were transported to Stephens County Hospital.

Durden, the driver of the Morgan Concrete truck, was uninjured.
