Lavonia Animal Shelter Offering Discounted Cat and Dog Adoptions

This family recently adopted one of the cats offered in this month’s free adoption

If you have been considering adopting a dog or cat, you might want to check out the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter in Lavonia.

Shelter manager Tammie Jordanais says the shelter is working with the UGA Veterinary School Spay/Neuter program.

According to Jordanais, shelter staff have been taking dogs and cats to the Veterinary school to be fixed before they are put up for adoption.

“This year we participated in the UGA 3rd Year Vet Student spay/neuter program. All of our large dogs and all of our cats that have been spayed and neutered at UGA are up for adoption at big discounts,” she explained. “Through the month of October, the dogs are available for $13 and the cats are free.”

Like the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter, the Lavonia shelter has also seen another record year in cats and kittens being turned in.

In July, the Toccoa-Stephens County Shelter offered an adopt one/get one free adoption special when they were faced with over 150 cats and kittens needing homes.

Jordanais says so far, the spay/neuter program has been successful in placing cats and dogs that might not have found homes otherwise.

“Every year we hope it will get a little better, but it seems to be getting worse,” she said. “We had a huge cat population this year, and we’ve had as many as 100 cats here over the summer. Our free cat adoption has gone very well. We’ve adopted out about 30 cats so far. We’re hoping the free and discounted adoptions will move out a lot of cats and dogs to make room for the ones waiting to come in.”
