Lady Indians Win their First Home Game of the Season

The Lady Indians Varsity Fastpitch Softball team nailed down a win Monday, August 5, over Elbert County, 13-5, in the Varsity Softball home opener, following on the heels of the Lady Indians season opening win on the road last Thursday, August 1, over Commerce, 12-3.

In Monday’s matchup against Elbert County, Carson Stowe drove in five runs on three hits to lead Stephens County Varsity Indians past the Blue Devils. Stowe hit a home run to center field in the fifth inning, scoring three, doubled in the first, scoring one, and singled in the fourth inning, scoring one.

The Indians got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Fayeth Ivester singled, Stowe doubled, and Addison Vandal hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. The Indians added another run in the second after a Halee Shirley single. 

Elbert County scored three runs in the top of the third on a home run to right field by Emily Booth.

The Indians added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Kylee Glaze hit into a fielder’s choice, and Shirley lined out, each scoring one run.

Stowe’s homer to center field scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth for the Indians.

Riley Walker earned the win for the Indians. The right-hander gave up eight hits and five runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking one. Kamryn Webb took the loss for Elbert County. The starting pitcher went four and one-third innings, allowing 12 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits, striking out none and walking two.

The Stephens County Varsity Indians collected 14 hits in the game. Walker led with four hits in five at bats. Glaze, Nyleigh Hutto, and Shirley each collected multiple hits and Carley Funderburke led the Indians with two walks. 

According to Head Coach Kacey Ivey, “Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, collecting five walks for the game. Shirley stole three bases. Stephens County Varsity Indians ran wild on the base paths, tallying five stolen bases for the game. Stephens County Varsity Indians didn’t commit a single error in the field. Ivester had the most chances in the field with 10.”

Ivey added, “Booth provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Elbert County with three runs batted in. The number three hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Reagan Baker, Booth, and Hannah Brady each collected two hits for Elbert County. Brady stole two bases.”

Continuing a barnstormer first week schedule, The Lady Indians Varsity Softball team went up against Oconnee County last night, August 13 in a road game, will face West Hall High School on the road tonight, August 7, and will be on the road again tomorrow night, August 8, against Habersham Central.
